Like many other people, my journey with music production has been a rollercoaster of emotions but still to this day one of my favorite things to do. Growing up I had always been a very sports-oriented kid. My weekends and weekday nights would revolve around either Water Polo or Baseball practices and games. This combined with school left me with basically no time to pursue something like music. I will say that my gateway into music was more unconventional than most. On Christmas of my Junior Year of High School I received a DJ Controller as a present from my parents as a gift. I first began messing around with it when listening to music with my friends just because there were some silly effects but after a couple months, I began mixing house music and mainstream EDM which led me into eventually curating my own mixes. I slowly but surely had turned into a DJ and 1 year later I got my first gig DJ’ing my High Schools winter formal. This was an interesting experience to say the least but one that I’ll never forget. Shortly after that, I started coming across music production videos on YouTube. The idea of creating my own music which I could eventually incorporate into my DJ sets to play out to people was something that piqued my interest. I began producing my own original tunes but at a snail’s pace due to college apps. I applied to San Diego State as a Music Recording & Technology Major even though I had no experience working in studios or working with any equipment besides my laptop. Surprisingly I was able to able to secure an acceptance into San Diego State as a MR&T Major and for the first time in my life take classes involving music production. These classes not only opened my eyes to new techniques of music production but also gave me the chance to meet so many new and talented young producers with a wide range of genres that they produced. One friend that I met named Michaela was a pop producer with a super talented voice and within the first two weeks of school I learned to record vocals and combine them with a song that I had previously created. Through SDSU I have made countless connections in the local music industry here in San Diego which will hopefully continue to benefit me in years to come. While music production hasn’t been the easiest path, it has been one that I will continue to do for the rest of my life! I hope this blog helps newer producers understand that you don’t need a complex background in music to be successful in music production, you just need to find the drive to create works that hold value to you.
